The demon king by Cinda Williams Chima
Dear Books Lovers,
today we are talking about a book written by an author that I have been following for years but of which, before today, I had never read anything. Thanks to fanucci we can for the first time have a book by Cinda Williams Chima translated in Italy.
More precisely, the first of the seven kingdoms saga has been translated, which begins with The Demon King, the first of 4 books. Already for me a big point must be given to ce even if only for having noticed, after so many years from their release, the books of Chima and having decided to translate it. I am in love with this thing and I hope that the sequels will be translated soon too because, I tell you right now, I really liked this book.
So, one thing must be said, this book is almost like a great prologue because nothing special happens except an introduction to the world we are in, to the hierarchies, and a great detailed explanation about the characters. Despite this, however, I finished the book in a couple of days, and lately it’s a great thing since I’ve been reading for almost a month.
It was a beautiful and fluent book because world building is not complicated. Of course at first I struggled a bit to understand it, a map would have been appreciated, but apart from that, when you understand the main setting, you understand pretty much everything.
I cannot give you a real fulcrum of this initial story because it was all one explaining and giving details to get to the end of the most important revelation, which I cannot reveal for a matter of spoilers, but I can tell you that it is really worth getting to the end, I already have some idea of what might happen in the sequel and I really can’t wait.
And if you think the book might bore you, it won’t. Trust me. There is everything one could wish for, a well-created world, adventure, well-kept secrets to be revealed and a strong romance component though, don’t expect a slowburn story. Already on page 100 Raisa had kissed two people.
A little ‘plot I leave it to you though. Our protagonist is called Han, a character already done and finished. He is the only man in the family, before he always ended up getting into trouble by stealing, now he has stopped and tries to earn a living in other ways to bring something home to his mother and sister.
Raisa instead, our female protagonist, is the crown princess of the kingdom. The real difference between Han and Raisa is that he is an ordinary citizen who often lives together with the clan, a group of people and also a very important part of the story. She, on the other hand, albeit the daughter of a clan member, lives in a castle surrounded by people who serve the queen. Some of them are capable of practicing magic, and those with such ability are in constant conflict with clan members.
The story will develop around these two characters, what they will discover, what they will have to face and much more that, in words it is difficult to explain, but to read it is a beautiful adventure to immerse yourself in.
A 4-star book for which we only have to wait for the sequel. Meanwhile, I sit down and take the time with other readings.
