Small Favors by Erin A. Craig
Hello Books Lovers,
I try to dispose of some reviews of books that have already been released because, if you don’t know, a whole world of books will be out in the next few weeks, May will be a very busy month. Books by Fanucci, Rizzoli, Mondadori and many others will arrive in all bookstores, titles that we have been waiting for in Italy for years, including the second trilogy of the Shatter Me series by Tahere Mafi for Fanucci.
And it is Fanucci that I have to thank today for the book I am going to talk about, Small Favors by Erin A. Craig. Small Favors is one of those books that will keep you on the edge of your seat all the time, a book with its spooky and mysterious notes set in the small town of Amity Falls.
You know those books that, even if you really like the story, the plot enchants you, doesn’t strike you that much? Here it happened to me with Small Favors. The plot and the way it was structured is of a mastery that few have, but overall as a book it didn’t drive me crazy. I understood the real problem is that the author’s writing style is not the right one for me, because the same thing happened to me with her other book, house of salt and sorrows.
Both stories have a lot of potential, but the writing isn’t, again, for me. I also discovered, or rather confirmed, while reading, that scary stories are not for me either. The anxiety of what could happen, the not being able to not look at some sentences of the following pages in search of small spoilers, do not make me enjoy reading the story as much as I would like.
It’s all a mystery in this book, from the characters who look like friends and ultimately turn out not to be, to those who look like enemies when they are friends. The mystery in Amity Falls is in every corner, especially when strange things start to happen and our protagonist, Ellerie, glimpses the figure of a woman in a white dress in the woods.
Because even if the mystery begins to be seen from the beginning, there is so much, but much more that will come later. As winter arrives, entities appear with the purpose of fulfilling the wishes of the villagers, but none of them really know how dangerous it is to trust the Dark Watchers.
Ellerie will have to save her family and prevent everything from being destroyed. The title of the book itself has a great significance, because the small favors are precisely the wishes that the inhabitants give to the Observers because the purpose of the latter is to reduce everything they encounter to ruin.
The book will not lack a romantic component well intertwined with the rest of the story, which however will not appear immediately but it will take a while to get there.
If you are looking for a story that gives you the creeps and makes you fall in love with the plot, then Small Favors is for you. Just because I don’t like the author’s writing style doesn’t mean it will be the same for you too. I know many people who love Erin A. Craig. I give 3.5 stars to this book 😉
