The shadow of what was lost by James Islington

Hello Books Lovers,

Just two days ago, on the 18th, the entire fantasy trilogy written by James Islington came out for Fanucci. I have been waiting for this moment for months, initially these books were supposed to come out in November, but finally the time has come when I was able to read The Shadow of what was lost and I do not regret even a second because it was totally worth it.

I tell you the truth, the prologue was not the best, obviously by continuing to read everything becomes clearer but initially it did not make much sense and I had started to think that I would not like this book, but already from the first chapter I was proved wrong. The story takes a lot, it’s smoother than you might think and discovering these new mysterious characters makes everything more interesting. Their names are Davian, Wirr and Asha, and the most intense and interesting moment of this book is just when these 3 are forced to split up, without knowing who is still alive and who is not, the real suspense and attachment to the pages is right on the journey of discovery.

What attracts the reader to continue reading as one goes on are precisely the mysteries, the twists and turns when one least expects them, and then all the crucial details that are revealed little by little, with great skill, and not all in the same points, to never leave empty and boring scenes, there is always something interesting and new to discover.

In this world, magic is divided into two, the practicable and the forbidden as in any self-respecting story and, even if I have never read Sandersen – much appreciated author – James Islington has written and inspired some anecdotes of his trilogy on of Sandersen’s stories so if you like this author then you will certainly appreciate the Licanius Trilogy.

Like any self-respecting high fantasy, the story is accompanied by a beautiful map to accompany the reading throughout the story without missing anything in the world-building, even this well done. Maybe I’m still enchanted by the reading or because there aren’t any, but right now I just can’t find fault with this story. Maybe I also read it at the right time, without any forcing from deadlines or review parties and I fully appreciated it. Maybe with a cold mind something negative will come to mind, but for the moment all I can think about is its beauty, and I can’t wait to complete the reading of the entire trilogy. For the evaluation they are not full 5 stars, but they come very close.

The shadow of what was lost by James Islington

As destiny calls, a journey begins.
It has been twenty years since the godlike Augurs were overthrown and killed. Now, those who once served them — the Gifted — are spared only because they have accepted the rebellion’s Four Tenets, vastly limiting their powers.
As a Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war lost before he was even born. He and others like him are despised. But when Davian discovers he wields the forbidden power of the Augurs, he and his friends Wirr and Asha set into motion a chain of events that will change everything.
To the west, a young man whose fate is intertwined with Davian’s wakes up in the forest, covered in blood and with no memory of who he is. . .
And in the far north, an ancient enemy long thought defeated begins to stir.

Mi chiamo Miriam e sono l'amministratore di Me and Books.
