So Books Lovers,

The time has come to dispose of some reviews, because ok I haven’t read much in the last period, but I’ve still read something in the last two months and therefore I have to start publishing reviews for two reasons. One, because otherwise I forget to write them and I forget what I had to write and two because otherwise the blog remains too inactive and is not good.

The winter session of exams is draining my energy. I don’t want to read or write. I don’t want to do anything, much less write reviews but I have to do it and so today we’re talking about Hopeless by Colleen Hoover, a book that was kindly sent to me by Fanucci whom I thank.

Hopeless is a story told from a female point of view, but it also has a book from a male pov and, like all the Hoover books I’ve read to date, this one also deals with very, very important issues. Before talking about the plot, however, I would like to talk for a moment about the author’s writing, every time I read a book by Hoover it seems to me that I am reading a book by a different author.

I was told the problem could be the translations but I don’t know because some of these books were published by the same publisher. In my opinion it is Hoover that has changed her style over the years, or rather her style has evolved into a smoother one. Hopeless is kind of the middle ground among her books that I’ve read. It wasn’t super smooth but it wasn’t that slow either. I appreciated Losing Hope more, the equivalent from the male point of view, but that’s another thing.

Sky is our protagonist, a girl who was adopted as a child. Who has always been homeschooled, who has never had a cell phone, a television, or a boyfriend. However, she has a best friend who lives right next door to hers. But now Sky is almost 18 and would like to go to college, so she convinces her mother to let her go to school for at least the last year of high school.

Holder, on the other hand, would no longer want to go to school. He has lost many things in his life, a dear childhood friend who was kidnapped and now his sister who committed suicide. After Less’ death Holder is no longer the same, he has no desire to do anything. Until he meets Sky at the supermarket, mistakes her for his old lost friend and something strange happens, Holder wants to spend as much time as possible with her, he likes her and she will be the one to change his mind about school.

This story, in a book that isn’t even that big, develops a lot. Many things happen, the characters discover many things. What happened to little Hope finally gets revealed, we discover her father abused of her, the reason why she was kidnapped. The real reason for Less’s suicide is revealed. A lot of intense and strong things happen. Thematics are always strong in Hoover’s books.

For this reason, if you have a weak mind and cannot digest certain stories, I do not recommend these readings because they are very detailed. But if you would like to read it, know that, although as I said before, Hoover’s writing has some moments of no, do it, I don’t think you will regret it.

Mi chiamo Miriam e sono l'amministratore di Me and Books.
