You’ve reached Sam by Dustin Thao
Hello Books Lovers,
these are the hardest reviews I have to write, that is, the negative ones. I state that, even if I tried to complete this reading, I did not succeed, and I am sorry because I will have to base the review only on what little I have read.
You’ve reached sam by Dustin Thao is one of those booktok phenomena books, those books that for a period of time have been on everyone’s lips and have been liked by almost everyone. Unfortunately, I am one of those who did not like it.
I started reading because I was told by a friend of mine that the book is very beautiful, very smooth etc. Obviously I trusted and started reading but already from the prologue things took a negative turn for me.
I was unable to finish the prologue in one reading, I had to complete it twice and still I didn’t understand much. I couldn’t distinguish what was a memory and what the present, I couldn’t distinguish what was the protagonist remembering in the moment she expressed her pain or her happiness.
When the first few pages don’t get me there isn’t much hope for the rest of the book. For me, there’s a difference between slow start and confusing start. With the slow start I can try hard, but if from the beginning I don’t understand anything I will go on with the pages finding myself more and more confused. And unfortunately this happened because even in the chapters I couldn’t make out some details. I got to a certain point where unfortunately I had to say that’s enough. I preferred putting this book aside rather than end up in a reading slump and throw myself on other books that I knew I would like more.
I undeerstood that, although some like it, Dustin Thao’s writing is not for me. However, this does not exclude that the author has talent and that even if I didn’t like it, you might like it. If you like the genre I recommend reading.
The book is about this girl who loses the love of her life but then unexpectedly starts receiving messages from her dead boyfriend. They keep communicating like that for a while, and the idea of the book itself is very nice, it almost seems like a way to close something that has caused a lot of pain.
That said, I gave this book 1 star because, as a lover of the genre, this story just didn’t suit me.
