Hello Books Lovers,

before closing for the holidays, next week, I leave you the review of The house in the cerulean sea by T. J. Klune, one of the latest publications by Oscar Mondadori by an author that I like a lot. The first Klune’s book I read is Wolfsong published in Italy by Triskell edizioni, an LGBTQ-themed romance / fantasy that had stolen my heart.

As in Wolfsong, and his narrative full of ups and downs, The house in the cerulean sea reflects the characteristics of this author that I had already noticed. But if in Wolfsong the beginning was very interesting and the slow parts arrived in the middle of the book, in this new title it is the other way around. Initially I struggled to enter the story, I could not understand the meaning or the goal towards which it would then evolve, but after a hundred pages everything became clearer and then I saw the writing characteristics that made me fall in love with this author.

What I like most is the way in which Klune is able to give the right timing to every action, to every scene, and also to the bond between the characters. He builds everything with skill, without speeding up relationships, whether they are friends or otherwise, to make everything more truthful. Relations to which the reader could become attached and even identify with.

Linus Baker is a social worker who is in charge of making sure that children in orphanages, with special abilities, receive the right treatment they deserve. The world in which this story is set is a place where magic exists, along with creatures other than the human race.

It is only after 17 years of work that he is summoned to take on a special and secret position. He has to go to this orphanage, to an island – where he will see the ocean for the first time as he always wished – to make sure everything is okay, that the children are living in a healthy environment, and also check why the supervisor’s reports , Mr. Arthur Parnassus, are so short and vague.

His task will be to report the situation on a weekly basis. But will he be able to remain impartial? Will he be able to carry out his task without being personally involved? You can answer these questions only by reading it.

Klune is always able to create situations that are pleasant to read, with style differences in each of his books. He is a vast author, but also full of mastery in creating stories to expose diversity as normality. 3.75 stars, all the blame to the slow start.

Mi chiamo Miriam e sono l'amministratore di Me and Books.
