Hi Books Lovers,

on August 29 Longanesi published The Chain by Adrian McKinty, a book full of positive feedback from renowned authors such as Stephen King, Steve Cavanagh, Lee Child, Diana Gabaldon, Tana French. In short, it was highly appreciated by critics, and I certainly cannot blame these comments on the potential of the story.

The Chain is a thriller, based on an idea of the author that is very interesting, very realistic and very beautiful, full of potential, which however could be developed in a better way.

The book itself is not bad, on the contrary, however, I found some details, or by translation, or precisely by the author’s writing, a bit strange and improbable, more in the second part than in the first.

In the first part, the book is rather pleasant, as much as this kind of thriller can be. The Chain is nothing more than a movement called in this way in which kidnappings of teenagers follow one another. Rachel and her daughter are targeted by this Chain. Kylie is kidnapped, and Rachel is contacted first by the Chain and then by her daughter’s kidnappers for instructions, because she has to do things if she wants her daughter back; things like sending money to the chain and kidnapping another kid in turn. And she must not, under any circumstances, go to the police or her daughter will die.

I won’t make any spoiler to you, but I only mention something about the second part. The objective of the protagonists, despite all the difficulties, is to destroy the chain. The thing that left me a little perplexed about this second part is that it almost seems that the author was in a hurry to complete. The scenes in my opinion are too hasty, and things get to Rachel very easily, without even the slightest effort.

But again, the basic idea is nothing short of brilliant. There are many novels now that focus on this kind of plausible stories, and they are always books that make you think, especially the fact that they are things that could happen in reality. Maybe they really happen and we don’t even know it, there are many things that are hidden, and the world is really big.

If you have read The Chain and your opinion is different from mine, write it to me in the comments. I give this 3.5 stars because of the potential of the story although it could have been developed better, it is still a good enough in my ranking 🙂

Mi chiamo Miriam e sono l'amministratore di Me and Books.
