Hello Books Lovers,

today I’m talking about a book that has remained on my whishlist for years and years. A book I always wanted to read for its beautiful cover and talented author who wrote it, and instead I ended up reading the sequel duology without ever reading the original trilogy. But finally, thanks to Mondadori, Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo returned to Italy in a new guise. I would not have missed this second chance for any reason in the world.

One difference I have noticed with Bardugo’s more recent books is the length. The Six of Crows duology counts between 400/500 pages, and The Ninth House counts even more if I’m not mistaking, while Shadow and Bone in comparison is a small book. During the reading I never paused at what point I had reached, if I was halfway through, how much was missing from the end … I liked the reading too much, but then I arrive at page 230 of the file and I see that the story is already over, and I’m like “nooooo, it can’t end like this” and I tried to scroll down the pages again to read more. Yes, I know it’s a rather strange scene.

The good news, so to speak, in all of this is that the release of the second volume has already been announced for the end of January 2021, so fingers crossed and in the meantime I am killing time by reading The invisible life of Addie laRue to be released on the 24th. for Oscar. No, I will not start watching fanarts like I said I would have done for Serpent & Dove for the simple fact that very often while reading I would stop to go and look for them online, so I think I have exhausted them all XD

As I told you before, probably due to the fact that Shadow and Bone was the first book that Bardugo completed, it has some differences with her later books. Among these is the difference of the setting because here we are in Ravka while in Six of Crows we are in Kerch. Another difference is the romance. In no other Bardugo book that I have read there’s this kind of romance, indeed a triangle, so present, a detail that made me love this book even more.

There are three categories of readers, those who can’t even read a book that has a love triangle, those who don’t care as long as the book is done right, and those like me who like it. And I can tell you that sometimes it is done well, sometimes not, but here it was done just fine, it integrated into the story beautifully, and in its simplicity helped to make this story flow even faster.

The real protagonist of this book is Alina, an orphan who grew up in an orphanage with her best friend Mal. Until the age they start working for the army, she as a cartographer, he as a searcher, things seem pretty normal. But then something happens that will change their lives forever.

Every young child is tested to determine if they have Grisha abilities or not, and this had happened to Mal and Alina as well, but they hadn’t manifested any power. But the truth is that Alina is a Gisha, one of the most powerful because with the rarest power, the power that can save or destroy the kingdom, and she had managed to hide it so as not to be separated from Mal.

Thus begins her training, getting closer and closer to the charming Darkling, but the stronger she gets the more she is in danger, and it is precisely when time is running out that Alina is helped to escape, with a shocking revelation about an action that she would never have believed possible because she had been deceived all this time.

Alina runs away, finds Mal, she thinks she is about to succeed in her intent and save the kingdom instead of destroying it, but things don’t go according to her plans, and to find out how it will go, even if I have some dark theory yes – I have the feeling that Mal and Alina are not safe at all -, we have to wait for January, and we hope that the new year will bring, along with many books, also something better than what this 2020 has brought.

Mi chiamo Miriam e sono l'amministratore di Me and Books.
