Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline
Hello Books Lovers,
perhaps this is the moment that every reader and fan of Ernest Cline has been waiting for. Years ago Ready Player One first came out, super-acclaimed, award-winning, it was so well-received that it became an Oscar-nominated film for its special effects.
It was a stand-alone, and a few months ago it became a duology. That this was the author’s biggest mistake is no wonder. I was happy to see that I’m not the only one going against the tide on a book that promised to be another masterpiece.
If you have read my review – if not I link it here – of Ready Player One, you know that I had not loved it madly, but I had appreciated it enough to give it 4 stars. The adventure was more than appreciable. Here, however, everything becomes a monotonous loop, without thrilling the reader at all, and destroying all my expectations.
Ready Player Two is a bit of what can be called a flop, one of those sequels that will never live up to its predecessors. The characters have changed and, I don’t want to say nonsense, but it seemed to me that Cline’s writing also changed.
I want to give this book 3 stars – one probably given as a gift – because, if perhaps structured in a different way, without all the changes from the first book, it would have been a great story. After all, we all have that book of which we would like the sequel but we know it will never be written, this was just one of those cases, too bad it failed.
Would I recommend you to read it? More than anything else I would not advise you against it. There are people who liked it. If you go to Goodreads you’ll see reviews of all kinds. And I highly recommend that you follow the calendar of this review party and read the thoughts of other bloggers as well. If you read it, or have already done so, let me know, I’m really curious to read your impression. Below instead I leave you the plot that, unlike my other reviews, today I will not be here to expose.
Hidden within Halliday’s vaults, waiting for his heir to find it, lies a technological advancement that will once again change the world and make the OASIS a thousand times more wondrous – and addictive – than even Wade dreamed possible.
With it comes a new riddle, and a new quest: a last Easter egg from Halliday, hinting at a mysterious prize.
And an unexpected, impossibly powerful, and dangerous new rival awaits, one who’ll kill millions to get what he wants.
Wade’s life and the future of the OASIS are again at stake, but this time the fate of humanity also hangs in the balance.
Lovingly nostalgic and wildly original as only Ernest Cline could conceive it, Ready Player Two takes us on another imaginative, fun, action-packed adventure through his beloved virtual universe, and jolts us thrillingly into the future once again.
