Hi Books Lovers,

today we celebrate the release of Leigh Bardugo’s The Ninth House, in Italy thanks to Mondadori, with a review party, so follow the calendar and move on to have a look at the other blogs too.

This book, from the genre reported in the book stores, etc. it was supposed to be a horror, but honestly I haven’t seen anything about horror, and I would say that in my case it is a plus point for the book since horror is not my favorite genre for books. I would call the ninth house more like a paranormal, mystery, adult …

While reading I had more ups and downs than I would have expected. Many times it was almost as if I was bored reading, but then those rich scenes came and made me want to go straightly to the end. And luckily I did it because otherwise I would never have had the opportunity to read about Alex who solves the mystery and settles things. Another somewhat confusing thing was the flashback chapters, but those always confuse me, whatever book it is, you get used to it just by reading on.

The plot is not as intricate as it might seem. Alex Stern has always been a different girl, able to see the grays, the ghosts, but she had never been able to say this to anyone, who would have believed it? This ability has created many problems for her, as well as the approach to alcohol and drugs. Until when she was grown up, Lethe, a secret society located in Yale, did not discover her skills and wanted her with them as a new Dante, an important position within a somewhat complicated society.

But things change when her Virgil, who should be like an instructor for her, disappears, thus making her the new Virgil. Now all of Lethe’s responsibilities, so checking that the houses don’t do stupid things, etc, turn to her, plus she has to find out what happened to Darlington, her Virgil.

And to make matters worse, she also starts investigating a murder which, in her opinion, was not entirely natural. In short, Alex has a lot to do, and until the end many unexplained things will happen. But it is precisely in the end that the unexpected happens.

This book should be a stand alone, but the open ending could mean that Bardugo might one day give us the ending we deserve, and as always hope is the last to die.

And as if the good news about Bardugo’s books weren’t already enough, I just read that this book will soon become a TV series with our Leigh as executive producer.

Alex Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. A dropout and the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved crime – the last thing she wants is to cause trouble. Not when Yale was supposed to be her fresh start. But a free ride to one of the world’s most prestigious universities was bound to come with a catch. Alex has been tasked with monitoring the mysterious activities of Yale’s secret societies – societies that have yielded some of the most famous and influential people in the world. Now there’s a dead girl on campus and Alex seems to be the only person who won’t accept the neat answer the police and campus administration have come up with for her murder. Because Alex knows the secret societies are far more sinister and extraordinary than anyone ever imagined. They tamper with forbidden magic. They raise the dead. And, sometimes, they prey on the living…

Mi chiamo Miriam e sono l'amministratore di Me and Books.
