Hello Books Lovers,

Oscar Mondadori is publishing unique books of their kind eh, among these there is also The descendant of the crane by Juan He, a book in which the protagonist is an Asian princess in a world created by the author’s imagination explained in a beautiful map, a story with a plot never read before that expands the views of fantasy and will make every reader fall in love.

Precisely for this reason I want to start this review in a different way than usual, I want to leave you the plot before making my considerations. With some books it’s really hard not to make spoiler, some will always show up, but I’ll try to be as meticulous as possible. And I remind you that this book too, along with Siege and Storm, Sorcery of Thorns and others, was released on January 19 for Oscar Vault – as already mentioned above.

Tyrants cut out hearts. Rulers sacrifice their own. Princess Hesina of Yan has always been eager to shirk the responsibilities of the crown, but when her beloved father is murdered, she’s thrust into power, suddenly the queen of an unstable kingdom. Determined to find her father’s killer, Hesina does something desperate: she enlists the aid of a soothsayer&;a treasonous act, punishable by death&; because in Yan, magic was outlawed centuries ago.

Using the information illicitly provided by the sooth, and uncertain if she can trust even her family, Hesina turns to Akira&;a brilliant investigator who’s also a convicted criminal with secrets of his own. With the future of her kingdom at stake, can Hesina find justice for her father? Or will the cost be too high?

In this shimmering Chinese-inspired fantasy, debut author Joan He introduces a determined and vulnerable young heroine struggling to do right in a world brimming with deception.

Lately, I found myself in difficulty in reading books of this kind, due to their complexity and their messages that are often not so easy to understand. The last book similar to this I read was The Poppy war, then I through myself into the usual fantasy young adult that I have always read very easily. But when the Oscar announced the release of The descendant of the crane and I read the plot, it intrigued me so much that I couldn’t help it.

I confess that it has some parts a little slower, some more complex parts that are not read very easily, but in the end almost all books are like that, it’s hard to find the perfect story, yet as a whole it was a very interesting book and exciting, this is also a stand-alone with a beginning and end worth reading. It is perhaps one of those books that takes a few more days to complete, but the story of Hesina is interesting, at times exciting, which nevertheless flows.

I would like to tell you about the plot and yet I am afraid of making noteworthy spoilers. But I can tell you that the story attracts reading since the first chapter in which Hesina, after the death of her father, and together with her brother, go to a place to meet a person who could reveal to her things that will change everything. . An encounter that if discovered could be considered high treason, and this is how this story begins.

Hesina never wanted to become queen, yet she can’t help it, but she will spend a lot of her time investigating and finding out who her father’s killer is because even if many don’t think like her, Hesina is almost sure it is so and the killer could be some of those closest to her.

However, probably because of her age, Hesina has been given a task in a society that in my opinion is far beyond her capacity. The author was very good at outlining the whole story but perhaps she should have made some changes in the creation of our protagonist, yet all in all the story has its own logical sense, and the choice not to write anything else set in this world for the moment to my opinion is more than reasonable.

Personally these stories are not among those I would reread, but I am happy to have discovered and read them at least once. Another story that adds to my baggage even if now and perhaps for a while I will put aside these complex High fantasy to devote myself to lighter reading as I once did, university life does not facilitate the work of a book blogger XD. As a rating I give 4 stars but they are not quite full, more a 3.75

Mi chiamo Miriam e sono l'amministratore di Me and Books.
