Hello Books Lovers,

Among the thousands of new releases that I will talk about this week, today a new LGBTQ + themed romance is out, published by Oscar Mondadori, which last year was very successful among US readers. Now it has arrived in Italy.

The book in question is Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas, a very particular book, not only for its themes but also for the setting, which I had never seen before. I’m talking about the world of the Brujx. This Latin American community, in the book, is based in Los Angeles, and the translation of bruj would be witch, but they define themselves as much more, related to the earth.

Our protagonist Yadriel is a gay, trans boy, who has never been understood by his community, especially by his father who even now, in the present of the events, sees him as a girl who must be together with other women when he calls to gathered the men of the community for research.

Yadriel’s is not an easy life in itself, and being in a community where the roles between men and women are well defined does not help at all. Among their abilities is that of seeing spirits, talking to them, and with the approach of the day of the dead, also having the possibility to see people they care about who are no longer in their lives.

At the beginning of this story, Yadriel’s cousin dies, and the searches I was talking about earlier will be to find his body. Yadriel and his cousin Maritza want to help so much that they go to the cemetery to try to summon Miguel’s spirit, but in exchange they summon another boy, a schoolmate of the two who died of unknown causes. Yadriel should get rid of him, but the boy has no intention of returning dead without first finding out what happened to him.

It is a beautiful story, with a very fluent writing, despite everything, however, I would have expected something more from reading. I liked it, but it didn’t blow me away. On each page I looked for that twist that made me fall in love with this book, but it didn’t happen. There was no spark for me. Yet two qualities to be appreciated are the author’s originality and courage for having written a book with a story never seen before with a particular protagonist. 3.5 stars for me.

I also leave you the plot, not very different from what I summarized above.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can’t get rid of him.
When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his true gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free.
However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school’s resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He’s determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave.

Mi chiamo Miriam e sono l'amministratore di Me and Books.
