Hello Books Lovers,

I’d say last summer was very productive for me in terms of reading. I finished this book in early September and have had so many reviews already scheduled that I had to postpone this one to today. The book in question is A Tale of Magic, thanks Rizzoli for the copy, written by Chris Colfer, Glee actor who wrote many other middle-grade titles before this one, the first of a trilogy.

A tale of magic is set in a very sexist world I should say. Where women cannot read, nor study, nor do anything other than learn the house rules at school, and be prepared for marriage. Death penalty for those who do not follow the rules.

And then there is Brystal, an exception to the rules, because she is a curious girl, with a great desire to live, explore, and read, read a lot. Her brother passes her every book he can retrieve from the library and she devours it without thinking about the consequences. Always being careful not to get caught by her mother, but above all by her father, a high judge who would not think twice about condemning her for her crimes.

Which then happens when she gets caught in the library reading, and worse still, doing magic. Because more than cultured women, magic is evil. In fact, no one knows the difference between fairy and witch because everything is the same for them. Brystal is sent to an institution until one day Madame Weatherberry comes to her aid.

Madame Weatherberry has always wanted to open a school for fairies where she can teach her students to use their skills. With the blessing of the King of the South she does so, and Brystal, along with Saffron, will be her first pupils. The school is located in a place where no one dares to venture however dangerous it is, The in-between.

They learn to use their powers, make new friends, and more importantly, when difficulties begin and it’s their job to save the whole kingdom, they don’t hold back. Our protagonists are brave and valiant, as I am sure they will be in the adventure they will face in the next volume.

A Tale of Magic is a middle-grade that I do not limit only to children but also to adults because between adventure and magic there is much more, other themes. After all it is Brystal, a girl who was almost forbidden to live, who saves the whole world. 4 stars for this first story full of well-exploited potential, set in a fantastic place where I can’t wait to return soon.

Mi chiamo Miriam e sono l'amministratore di Me and Books.
